Introducing Our Presenters

Dr. Man-Hei Yip is an associate professor at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. A graduate of the Lutheran Seminary in Philadelphia, she served connecting Global Christianity and Mission at the Boston University School of Theology. She has had experience working with the Lutheran World Federation in Geneva, Switzerland and Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Men-Hei is very articulate about culture and understanding Christian faith. She will be sharing more of her story via Zoom technology during our Convention.

The Rev. Dr. Kathleen Mills serves as the pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Trumbull, Connecticut. Holy Trinity is a congregation of the Slovak Zion Synod in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Her Theological Masters degrees were from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia and has a Ph.D. in Biblical Interpretation from Brite Divinity School. She loves to teach and dig into scripture in a community setting. Kathleen makes her home in Woodbridge with Ryan, her husband, a Lutheran pastor in New Haven, and their three children. Having grown up in a church that was very active in serving the community around it and educated in a seminary that promoted advocacy and social justice, Pastor Kathleen has tried to make community organizing an integral part of her ministry.

The Rev. Alissa Oleson, a native of the Midwest, serves as the parish pastor for Good Shepherd, Quincy, MA. Her education begun in Columbus OH, then Harvard Divinity School and the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago served her well in her eclectic work experience. Pastor Alissa has served in a variety of community based arenas. In addition to loving to tell God’s story, she enjoys board games, beach walking, comedy, breweries and helping people connect to God

The Rev. James E. Hazelwood was elected June 9, 2012 and reelected on June 8, 2018 to a second six-year term, as bishop of the New England Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Under his leadership, the emphasis is to be a synod of holy experimentation. Congregations have been encouraged to “try something new.” Born in Concord, Massachusetts in 1959, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from California Lutheran College, and a Master of Divinity following studies at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and Union Theological Seminary. In 2001, he completed his Doctor of Ministry at Fuller Theological Seminary. Bishop Hazelwood is also a photographer, global traveler, and touring cyclist. His website is www.bishoponabike.com

Convention Information

† Each Congregational Unit is encouraged to send one voting member to represent their church active unit. The Biennial Convention is the highest voting body of our Synodical organization.

Congregational Unit leaders are encouraged to elect or appoint one voting member to serve on behalf of the women in your group. These voting members will have “voice and vote” on topics of discussion. If your church does not have an active Congregational Unit, you are invited to appoint a woman who will have “voice” on the floor of the convention. You will find the steps to become an active unit here.

† Through Bible Study, workshops, a hands-on activity, nature, and more we will explore what's new and exciting things God has in store for each of us.

† Some of the workshops being offered include:

  • Prayers by The Bishop Hazelwood, The Reverend Alissa Oleson, and The Reverend Dr. Kathleen Mills.

  • Short Story by Sunrise Forever, Inc., a Lutheran ministry supported by St. Matthew Trinity, Pawtucket, RI providing backpacks for schools in Liberia. Sunrise Forever, Inc. is the recipient of a Gift in Kind. We are collecting material to fill school backpacks such as sharpened pencils, pens, composition notebooks, paper, erasers, glue, pencil sharpeners, sticky notes, crayons, markers, folders, straight edge rulers, and child craft scissors.

  • Global Storytelling coordinated by Ade Monareh. Panelists: Dr. Man-Hei Yip, Clare Gordon and others via Zoom and in person.

  • Theme Bible study ongoing throughout the weekend with Pastor Kathleen Mills. Bring your own Bible, use one at Calumet, or use your electronic device.

  • What’s Up in Chicago? with Elizabeth Burgess, our CWO President, Joy Michalicek’s representative. Get the most up to date information on Triennial 2023, Katie’s Fund Campaign and other happenings!

Dress for the weekend is casual with comfortable walking shoes if you wish to explore the beauty of Camp Calumet. The weather in late October can be unpredictable, dress in layers.

Food is always plentiful at Camp Calumet but if you wish to bring a small snack to share, you are invited to do so. Coffee and tea is always available. If you have special dietary needs, please indicate that on the registration form. Note that all meals are served in the dining room in the Conference Center.

† There will be opportunity for both Congregational Unit and Personal Monetary offerings on the weekend. Congregational Unit offerings will be collected during a business session on Friday. One-half of that offering will stay in New England to support our missions and Ministries, and the other one-half will go to the Churchwide expression of our organization. Personal monetary offerings will be received at the closing Eucharist on Saturday.

† As with any organization there must be leaders willing to carry on the business of the organization. We are seeking women to make a commitment to serve Christ and the women in the New England Synod. Included in this mailing are descriptions of what is expected of a board member/officer. Please prayerfully consider whether you can make the commitment needed. If you cannot do it yourself, can you think of a woman in your midst who might accept the challenge? It is the mission of WELCA to “mobilize women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ.” We need leaders who can help each of us live that mission.

Should you have questions, please feel free to contact Alice Carlson, NE/WELCA 7B president at alycarlson99@gmail.com
